For international students in the UK – work is the best way to get a real life “education” and subsidize your studies.
However it does require a few things beyond just being able to study in the country.
First things first – If you are NOT a British citizen, you will often need to enter the United Kingdom. The British Ministry of the Interior (Home Office) has three categories depending on the requirements to enter:
• Citizens of the European Economic Area : You do not need permission to enter the United Kingdom (In 2017 Anyway). The European Economic Area (EEA) includes all the countries of the EU, Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland. Swiss citizens are also included in this category. You will need valid passport or a national identity card issued by a EEA country for entry.
• Nationalities that do not require a visa (Non-Visa Nationals) : Only need a certificate of entry when they come to the United Kingdom to work or to settle permanently. This category is composed mainly of citizens of the Commonwealth.
• Nationalities that need a visa (Visa Nationals) : They need a visa to enter the United Kingdom regardless of the reason they come. This includes Students which will most ofter have a Tier 4 Visa but as a result – have the ability to work 20 hours per week legally.
Beyond the ability to legally be in the UK, you will also need and NI Number.
National Insurance Number: Like a Social Security Number in many countries – you need one to connect you to how much tax your employer needs to give to the government before you get any.
If you start to work you do not have it, they assign you a provisional one. Ideally you will get one before you start work, but it is not necessary – the main problem is that you get charged emergency tax while you wait.
To get paid fully as quickly as possible – you have to ask for an appointment at the nearest Jobcentre or use a service to help guide you. They often but not always need conduct an interview with you. In the interview you only have to confirm the data of the form that you fill in, where you live, how long you intend to be, etc. It takes about 15 days to give you the appointment and up to two months to be issued with an NI Number – although this also depends a lot on the city where you are.
For foreign professionals, finding a job in the United Kingdom is quite reasonable, due to the wide range of jobs offered in various sectors of the market. One of the most important requirements to be able to find a good job is tohave a high level of English and to speak it in a fluent and comprehensible way.
If you are already in the UK and you find yourself unemployed, you can start looking at recruitment or temporary work agencies. In them you can leave your resume to give you advice on the various jobs to which you can apply. Then just wait for the call to be offered a job according to your profile.
